Lunada Bay Little League opened play on its brand new turf infield on January 30, 2016, with its second annual "Glory Days" adult softball tournament and fundraiser, and again the event was a big success. Teams from as far away as Irvine came to compete with teams staffed with LBLL alumni and present LBLL board members alike.
In the double-elimination format tournament, LBLL ('82) and PVHS ('87) alum Mike McKay led his team through the winners bracket before falling just short of the title in extra innings to a local team captained by Kevin Ding, resulting in one final game to determine the champion. Shaking off the fatigue of playing their sixth consecutive game, Kevin Ding's team exploded for 13 runs in the first inning, but McKay's team didn't give up, and the teams traded big offensive innings before Kevin Ding's team finally secured a 33-25 win and the title as darkness fell upon the fields. Dan Woike was named tournament MVP for pitching almost six complete games in a row for the champions.
LBLL Board Member and tournament organizer, Damian Capozzola, was pleased with the event. "It was a great day of competition and again a four figure fundraiser for LBLL. We hope to grow the tournament to even bigger proportions next year and push towards five figures taking into account entry fees as well as other donations and community support."
LBLL Minors Coach, Jerry Lekawa, played on the winning team and said, "What an amazing day of softball…I can’t remember a competition so close between two very talented teams. A class act on both sides, and a class tournament. So happy to be a part of such a great community, and can’t wait to play again next year!"
Be sure to mark Saturday, January 28, 2017 on your calendars for the 3rd Annual LBLL Glory Days Softball Tournament!
