For the second consecutive intraleague game, the Lunada Bay Major Diamondbacks put together a last inning rally to prevail, this time finally getting past the Lunada Bay Cubs.
The Diamondbacks enjoyed another strong outing from Patrick Robles on the mound, as Robles went 5 and 2/3 innings and struck out 14 batters, but Leo Casey and John Duffy were having equal success on the mound for the Cubs, assisted by some nifty defense from Mateo Mackiewicz and Dylan Dempster. The score stood at 3-1 Cubs through four innings, thanks primarily to a timely hit from call-up Keegan Leslie, who slapped an RBI double just inside the third base bag and then hustled around the bases to score himself when the throw in from the outfield sailed high.
The Diamondbacks scratched together two runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game, but the Cubs responded in kind to lead 5-3 going into the top of the sixth. Down to their final three outs, the Diamondbacks dug deep, and loaded the bases when Drew Smitham and call-ups Jake Pekarek and Trevor Jones all reached base. This set the stage for a dramatic two-run double into the left field gap from Donovan Capozzola, which tied the game and shifted momentum in favor of the Diamondbacks, who ended up scoring six to take a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth. The Cubs showed some last inning fight of their own and had the tying run on deck before Diamondbacks closer Navraj Singh shut the door for good.
Both teams have midweek interleague games this week. The Cubs are at home to the PV Cubs on Tuesday while the Diamondbacks are at RH to play the RH Dodgers on Thursday. Good luck to both teams!
