The Reds lost to the mighty Red Sox in a game that was close until the last inning, when the Sox scored 6 runs to pull away. The game was called in the 5th inning due to darkness. The Reds did a great job at the plate bouncing back from a 1 hit effort against the Sox last Saturday, to out-hitting the Red Sox 10 to 2 yesterday. However, we gave up 12 walks, which proved to be the difference. Brian King had an awesome game, pitching two solid innings and leading the Reds offense, going 3 for 3 with a triple and 2 doubles. Gino Graziadio smoked two singles and had a stolen base, Ben Davidson pounded an RBI triple, Connor Leach smashed an RBI triple, Andrew Rigglaced an RBI double and Wyatt Chang roped 2 singles and had an RBI. Designated 1st base coach, Jack Good, on the Disabled List, had a tired arm waving all those Red hitters to second base and beyond! Great effort by the Reds to come from a 5 to 1 deficit to take a 6 to 5 lead in the 4th. Awesome effort Reds! Lots of good things happened yesterday that we should be pleased with.

Monday, 4/18 LB Reds at RH Red Sox RH Red Sox 14 LB Reds 13 An absolute slug fest at Rolling Hills field against a very solid RH Red Sox team. After a rocky start in the bottom of the 1st inning for the Reds, we played some very good baseball with some timely hitting, solid pitching and some good defense. Offensive stars this game were Curran Poulsen with a single, Leo Montiel with 3 walks and 2 runs scored, Mark O'Brien who was 2 for 2 with a run scored, Kevin Kane with a single and a run scored, Wyatt Chang with a clutch double in the 4th knocking in 2 runs, Brian King with a single and run scored, Ben Davidson with a single, a massive triple and 2 RBI's, Conner Leach with 2 doubles and two runs scored, Jack Good with 2 bombs - a double, a triple and 2 RBI's; he also struck out 5 in 2.5 innings,. Conner Leach led us off again with a hit...this time a double. Ben Davidson with a hard hit single scored Conner to break the ice. But we got a little kooky in the bottom of the 1st inning giving up 5 runs, of which 4 were unearned. Down 5-1 going into the 3rd inning, the Reds exploded for 8 runs, the most we've scored in an inning all year. A double by Jack Good, triple by Ben Davidson (which hit the fence on a short hop) and a single by Kevin Kane provided fire power for the inning. But as we have been known to do this season, we gave back 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd, which tied the game at 9 apiece. Another double by Conner Leach led off the 4th. Conner scored on a triple by Jack Good (which also hit the fence on a short hop), who then scored on a single by Brian King. Wyatt Chang followed with a double but we couldn't quite get those guys in from 2nd and 3rd. In the bottom of the 4th, the Sox scored 3 runs to take a one run lead going into the last inning (because of time limitations). The Reds came roaring back again with a single from Mark O'Brien to lead us off. Leo Montiel drew a 1 out walk and Curran Poulsen drove in two HUGE runs with a clutch single to give the Reds the lead. But it wasn't to be our day as the Sox ended up loading the bases in the bottom of the 5th. Bran King did a great job in relief getting 2 quick outs on a pop up and a strike out. But a bloop single just out of reach at 1st scored the winning runs, despite GREAT pitching from Brian. Another great effort but we came up a little short. However, we never quit, which has been our style all season long.
Wednesday, 4/27 LB Reds at SS Padres SS Padres 5 LB Reds 4 Last night at Silver Spur, the Reds had an epic battle against the mighty SS Padres, who I might add, are the 1st place Silver Spur team. The Reds have been steadily improving as the season progresses, particularly over the last few games. Against the 1st Place Silver Spur team, the Reds hit the ball extremely well. But the Padres infield played one of the best defensive games I've seen in my 11 year of coaching Little League. The Padres made 8 ground ball outs with no errors. And these were not easy ground balls. Outstanding play by the Padres infield. Reds pitchers, Brian King and Jack Good were fantastic against a very good hitting team. Jack struck out 8 batters in 3 innings and Brian struck out 3 in just over 2 innings. But this is a game of inches, as Ben Davidson can attest to. More on that later. Conner Leach led the game off with a 2 strike triple down the right field line. Jack Good then laced a 2 strike single into Center, driving in Conner. Jack then scored on a ground ball scalded by Ben Davidson. Two fielders choices on hard hit balls by Brian King and Wyatt Chang were examples of the outstanding defense the Padres threw at us all game long. Kevin Kane then hit a double pushing Wyatt to 3rd. And yet another great play by the Padres 3rd baseman ended the inning, preventing 2 Reds on 2nd and 3rd from scoring on a hard hit ball by Mark O'Brien. The Padres lead off the bottom of the 1st with an "Intermediate home run". (Triple to right, scored on an error.) But Jack Good came back top put down the Padres 2nd, 3rd and 4th batters, striking out the side. In the 3rd inning, a single by Conner Leach, and back to back doubles by Jack Good and Ben Davidson scored Conner and Jack for the Reds 3rd and 4th runs. But another great play by the Padres 3rd baseman, a leaping stop of a hard hit chopper by Wyatt Chang, ended the inning and again prevented Red's on 2nd and 3rd from scoring. The Padres battled back to score 3 runs in the 3rd keeping the game a tight 4-3 dual going into the top of the 5th when the Padres tied it up. Top of the 6th, tie game, Conner Leach worked the count for 7 pitch at bat drawing a 1 out walk. Jack Good hit one of the hardest ball of the game at the 2nd baseman who made an awesome play catching Conner for the 2nd out. Big Ben Davidson then proceeded to hit a BOMB to center field that cleared the fence on a bounce by about 6 inches. Had the ball hit the fence, Jack and maybe even Ben would score. Jack was then called out at home on a VERY close play when he tried to score after the Padres pitcher bobbled the throw frm the cathcer. The game ended with the Padres scoring one run in the bottom of the 6th for tough end to a very well played game. Additional shout outs go to Curran Poulsen and Wyatt Chang who had hits. And our catchers who did a great job behind the plate, Conner, Mark O'Brien and Leo Montiel. Mark also took a shot off his leg at 2nd base and still got the out at 1st. Colton Daum aslo made a couple of nice throws to the cut-off man from the outfield. Way to go Reds! Awesome game. We're peaking at the right time!

May 11 LB Reds 11 PV Giants 6 Well folks, we finally broke through. With 4 losses this year by one run and one loss by 2 runs, we are now safely in the WIN column! It was the best team effort all year, with terrific defense, great pitching and timely hitting. And we had a huge 5th inning scoring 8 runs to break out from a 4-3 deficit. Starting with our defense, great job by our outfielders who made several excellent plays. Leo Montiel and Andrew Rigg made excellent plays to keep the ball in front of them in Left Field and in Center. Other defensive stars were Curran Poulsen who made a terrific play going to his left on a slow roller at short with men in scoring position. Connor Leach made a huge play at shortstop with the bases loaded, firing the ball home just in time to force the runner, saving a run. Our catchers, Leo, Mark O'Brien and Connor were terrific all game long behind the plate. We had many, many offensive starts in this game. Colton Daum showed that you don't always need to get a hit to contribute at the plate. Colton walked twice and scored twice as a result of two disciplined At Bats. Kevin Kane also showed great discipline at the plate by walking twice. He was also hit by a pitch and scored a run. Gino Graziadio had a clutch hit to start the 5th and scored our first run in that break out inning. Connor Leach had two big hits and score a run. Wyatt Chang had a hit and scored a run on some aggressive base running. And Jack Good had a monster game at the plate scoring 3 runs, 3 RBI's, hit by a pitch and 2 hits, one of which was a shot with the bases loaded to break open the 5th inning. Our pitching was outstanding. Jack didn't have his "best stuff", but battled by striking out 4 and keeping the game close. Brian King had his best pitching outing of the year. He was fantastic, striking out 7 in 3 innings. He came in to the game by getting out of a bases loaded jam and then struck out the side in the bottom of the 6th inning. Awesome game, Brian! Every boy on the team contributed to this win. It's not always about getting hits or making diving plays in the field. It's about every player doing what he's supposed to do every inning. All the routine plays...the walks, taking an extra base, knocking the ball down in the outfield...all the little things add up to big wins, just as it did in this game. Congratulations Reds players! |
